What Are You Looking for in a Hardwood Lumber Supplier?

Last updated on June 13, 2012 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

Maybe I should have entitled this article, “What Should You Be Looking for in a Hardwood Lumber Supplier?” Either way, there are a few key qualities that would fit either bill.

1. Quality

Thorough research and long-standing relationships with lumber mills across the globe ensure that the wood purchased from hardwood lumber supplier J. Gibson McIlvain not only meets or exceeds industry-standard quality thresholds, but that it also comes from legal and responsible logging. Our time tested relationships with our supplying lumber mills (in some cases going back to the 1800s) also ensures that there is integrity all along the supply chain. We hold all our hardwoods to our strict, 3-part quality control process, so that when we deliver wood to your job site, you can be sure that it’s the kind of premium product that you expect.

2. Value

We won’t tell you that our prices will be the lowest you can find; however, they do reflect true value, when you consider the level of quality we offer. As a wholesale lumber dealer, we use a direct-buying model that allows us to import high-quality exotic species directly from their sources, as well as domestic hardwoods from mills right here in Pennsylvania and throughout the U.S. By cutting out the middle man (and buying straight from the wood-cutters!), we can pass along our savings to you, our greatly valued customers.

3. Experience

The lumber business cannot be learned overnight, and you want the kind of expertise that can only come with years of experience. Like the timber-drying process, some attributes can only come with good, old-fashioned time. Since the late 1700s, the J. Gibson McIlvain family has owned and operated a successful hardwood lumber supplier operation. Still run by members of the family that helped provide materials to build the Smithsonian and Thomas Jefferson’s home, you can be sure that we know all about the many types of wood and wood products which we sell.

4. Inventory

At J. Gibson McIlvain, we take seriously our responsibility to be a premium hardwood lumber supplier. Our inventory is both wide and deep, including a variety of both domestic and exotic species as well as various cuts and enough board feet in our stockyards to fulfill even the tallest order. Of course, that kind of inventory leads to our ability to deliver your order in a timely fashion.

5. Timeliness

No matter how large or small your order is, we realize that you don’t want to have to wait. Our own fleet of trucks allow us the flexibility to send out rush orders when they’re needed, but even our regular schedule means that wherever you are in the U.S., we’ll have your order to you within two weeks’ time.

From Appalachian Cherry to Honduran Mahogany or Teak, J. Gibson McIlvain has all the qualities you should and probably are already looking for in a hardwood lumber supplier.
