We get it: you like having options, but you also need a simple way to get started. Well, we’re here to help. Simply choose one of the three options below to start adding to the beauty in your outdoor space. You know what they say: good things come in threes!
A Terrific Trio for Hanging Baskets
Just like any form of art or decor, plant selection is at least rooted in some basic design principles. While incorporating an aesthetically pleasing variety of plants into a grouping may come naturally to some, there’s also somewhat of a formula you can follow to help ensure a positive result. According to Backyard Boss, each hanging basket should contain 3 types of plants: a filler, a spiller, and a thriller.
By “filler,” the idea is something that will, as the term implies, fill the majority of the container and conform to its shape. Various flowering plants can fit this requirement, as would a plant such as the Kong coleus, with its oversized, richly colored leaves. The second category of “spiller” refers to the kind of plant that will spill over the side of the basket and cascade. Begonias and variegated sage are popular choices for this. The third and final aspect of the eye-pleasing trio might be the most significant: a “thriller” is an attention-getting plant that provides the visual focal point of the arrangement. Typically brightly colored, a popular choice is purple cordyline.
Three-Dimensional Features for Your Poolscape
In addition to your pleasingly arranged hanging baskets, vines can be trained to grow along porch railings, up trellises, or on pergolas. Clematis and other flowering vines come in multiple color options and can really make a bold, beautiful statement. Some vines can be started in containers and really aren’t difficult to train to follow a structure, but they can really make a big impression.
All elements of your garden won’t be living things of course. Bird houses, fountains, benches, and brick or stone planters can provide dimensional anchors to your space. If you really like the appeal of outdoor structures, a gazebo or pergola might be in the picture. You’ll want to make sure not to cluster too many non-living elements together, or you’ll lose that life-giving effect you’re after.
Kitchen-Friendly Container Gardening
If all these possibilities are feeling overwhelming, remind yourself: it’s okay to start small. If you enjoy cooking with fresh ingredients, maybe a small windowsill herb garden would be a practical way to start. As easy as 1-2-3, basil, rosemary, and oregano are both versatile and hardy. When you make your own pesto or marinara sauce, you might just become a fan of container gardening! When the joys of gardening combine with the delights of cooking and you can take the delectable creations outside to enjoy al fresco in your outdoor oasis, be prepared to have all the feels!
