The Heart of Your Home Automation System: Transceivers

If you’ve read earlier entries about our starter kits, lamp modules, A/V equipment integration, wireless controllers, and decorator wall switches, you’ll note that they all have one thing in common: the transceiver. The command signals which you send through your wireless controller must be connected into your home’s wiring through some kind of device; the Transceiver is that device.

Plug-in Transceiver Module for X10

The X10 TM751 Plug-in Transceiver Module works by receiving RF signals from any of your X10 remotes. The TM751 then sends those signals to any connected modules via your home’s wiring. The TM751 is the brains behind your home automation system. It not only connects to appliance and lamp modules, but it also has an integrated appliance module, comparable to the AM486 Appliance Module.

A single TM751 Transceiver Module lets you operate any connected lights, appliances, or devices from any room in your house using any X10 Wireless Controller. (With a single transceiver, most homes can be fully automated.) Before entering a room, the TM751 allows you to set the mood with lighting, temperature, and music.

Plug-in Transceiver Module for X10

The RR501 2-Way Plug-in Transceiver Module makes it easy to relay RF signals from any X10 wireless controller or motion sensor to all of your X10 modules using your home’s existing wiring. This simple, cost-effective transceiver eliminates the need for new connections, allowing you to automate your home without a huge construction effort. Without leaving the room or even getting out of your favorite chair, you can impress your guests and effortlessly create the mood you wish.

While most home automation systems can effectively work with just one transceiver, locations that require several transceivers may experience signal collisions when using versions like the TM751. You won’t have to worry about such concerns if you need to utilize more than one RR501 to cover a broad region. The RR501 is designed to deliver signals only when electrical lines are clear, making it appropriate for settings with several transceivers. The RR501 Transceiver comes with its own appliance module and can control up to 16 sets of appliances or lights. Any X10 motion sensors, timers, or wireless controllers can send signals to it.

One or two TM751 Plug-in Transceivers or RR501 2-Way Plug-in Transceiver Modules will be enough to power most X10 home automation systems. If you’re using X10 security cameras, though, your system will require a bit more intelligence, which you’ll get in the CM15A ActiveHome Pro USB Transceiver Module.
