If you have a backyard swimming pool, a great swimsuit wardrobe is a definite must-have for the summer months. (After all, you’ll be wearing one a lot this summer, right?!) While you might think some people have bodies that look great in swimsuits while the rest of us just don’t, you might want to broaden your perspective a bit. Each body type has its own challenges, and some swimsuits will be more flattering to one person’s shape than another’s. No matter what body type you have, you can find a suit that will help flatter your unique curves.
Swimsuit Shopping for Your Body
According to stylists, there are a few basic keys to tricking the eye and helping you look your best when you’re in or near the pool. First, you want to distract the eye from seeing all those little flaws you’d rather people not see. Instead of a simple swimsuit in a solid color, prints and added elements like ruffles can help distract attention from parts that are larger or smaller than you would prefer. Second, you want to do what you can to draw attention to your best characteristics and away from the, well, not-so-winsome ones. You can apply that basic concept to any body type, but we’ll go into detail with a few common ones to help you get the idea.
Swimsuits Perfect for Pear-Shaped Bodies
If you have a pear-shaped body that’s smaller on top but curvy through your hips and thighs, you’re in great company! Did you know that you’re built just like Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce’? Your aim in finding a swimsuit is to ensure proper coverage for your bottom half and balance your proportions. To do that, we recommend finding a skirted bottom with a bottom edge that falls below the largest part of your thigh. (A thick band along the bottom or boy shorts will have the opposite effect, drawing attention to the feature you most want to hide.) Pair that skirted bottom with an attention-getting top that draws the eye upward, away from your hips.
Swimsuits Perfect for Curvy Bodies
If you’ve got curves throughout your body — your butt, your hips, your thighs, and your bust — you’re just like Kim Kardashian! Believe it or not, even she wouldn’t look great in some swimsuit styles. The key for curves is to make sure you have enough coverage and support. If you don’t want your curves to be obvious, stay away from bikinis with thick straps and ties as well as one-piece swimsuits. Instead, go for asymmetrical designs that accentuate the neckline. Even if you do opt for a monokini, you can benefit from color blocked designs that highlight your curves. Retro designs like boxy halter tops and high-waisted bottoms will be your friends, as well.
