Reduce Pain Before It’s Too Late

Last updated on August 28, 2012 by Sozo Staff 1 Comment

It is important to address pain as soon as you feel it because pain that isn’t properly managed can lead to serious physical problems and health issues. There are many steps to take to control of pain and prevent it from reoccuring. The physical therapy experts at Washington, DC’s PhysioDC  recommend the following tips for reducing pain throughout your body:

Maintain proper diet.

Maintaining a healthy diet is extremely important, yet it can also be very difficult in today’s society. It’s crucial to make an effort, though, because reducing the amount of high fat and high cholesterol foods in your diet can add years to your life and give you a huge boost in your energy levels .

Portion control and a balanced diet are also important in order to prevent painful diseases and to keep your bones healthy. Be sure to maintain a healthy weight; this reduces the strain placed on joints and muscles and will also reduce harm to your internal organs (because an often-overlooked negative side effect of weight gain is the buildup of dangerous organ fat). Being overweight can cause serious and deadly illnesses, so it is vital to maintain a healthy weight.

It is also important to intake adequate amounts of calcium, as calcium encourages strong bones and reduces the chance of fractures. Always be mindful of your diet and eating habits as they relate to your body and physical health.

Exercise regularly.

Although it can be time consuming and although it does take motivation, exercise can reduce pain and add years to your life. From taking a flight of stairs instead of the elevator to just taking a quick walk around your neighborhood, every bit of exercise helps your body stay in shape and helps to reduce pain. Cardio, strengthening, and flexibility workouts can help to reduce body weight and put you in better shape.

Look for every opportunity to work your muscles and joints, and remember to keep good posture. If you sit at a desk for long periods of time, take a walk every once in a while to avoid strains. Seek treatment (such as an online ergonomics evaluation) to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome if you type at a computer or write frequently. Exercising to stay in shape helps to control pain, and it also reduces the chance of serious health issues.

Know your risks.

A fundamental step to preventing pain is to know the risks of your lifestyle. Be aware of your family’s medical history, as you could be affected by certain hereditary diseases.  These diseases can often be unavoidable, but knowing the risk and taking proper preventative measures will help you to mitigate their impact.

It is also important to keep a regular sleeping pattern, as a lack of sleep or even too much sleep can cause muscle cramps and spasms. Most people require approximately seven to eight hours of sleep a night.

Most importantly, know the risk of any bad habits. Consuming large qualities of alcohol can cause pain in different joints and muscles, and it has an extremely negative impact on your body overall. Smoking and using drugs can also lead to pain throughout your entire body.

A proper diet, regular exercise, and knowing your risks can help with pain prevention to your entire body, especially your muscles and joints. Maintaining good health to reduce pain is not very complicated, and it’s never too late to start. These are really helpful tips. I suffer from chronic back pain and when I consulted with a doctor, I found out that I have mild scoliosis. I fell from the second deck of our bed last year and it was just recently that I have it diagnosed. Thankfully, my doctor said it wouldn’t get any worse but it wouldn’t get any better as well. I was told that exercise and physical therapies might help to alleviate the pain.
