Recognize & Eliminate Blue, Yellow, or Black Pool Algae, Part 3

Last updated on June 26, 2019 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

If you’ve ever dealt with algae in your backyard pool (see Parts 1 & 2), you know how frustrating it can be to eradicate. Along with wondering what kind of algae you have in your pool, you may wonder what causes this problem to develop in the first place.

How Algae Accumulates in Your Pool Water

As the outside temperature rises during the summer months, especially when there’s a high humidity level in the air, the amount of chlorine in your pool will tend to drop. That’s because the hot temperature outside the pool can raise the temperature of your pool’s water as well. This can cause water evaporation. These are the precise conditions that cause algae to initially enter the pool and to thrive. Not only can a lack of adequate chlorination increase the chance of algae appearing and spreading throughout your pool, but an imbalance of your other pool chemicals can also contribute significantly to the problem.

Tools for Removing Algae from Your Pool

There are a number of important algae-fighting products you can stock up on to help get rid of algae in your backyard pool. These include chemicals, filtering and cleaning equipment, and test kits.

1. Algae-Fighting Chemicals

Sanitizers, alkali, stabilizers, phosphate, pH chemicals, and other pool chemicals all impact the effectiveness of your pool’s chlorination. That’s why keeping your pool’s chemicals properly balanced at all times is an important way to help avoid an algae outbreak in your pool. As far as chemicals go, you should be sure to purchase plenty of chlorine shock and algaecide, as well as the aforementioned chemicals that are used to adjust the water’s pH level. These chemicals will all come in handy during the algae elimination process.

2. Filtration and Cleaning Equipment

When it comes to equipment designed to filter out impurities from the water, make sure you have an effective filtration system and a net for removing leaves, dirt, and debris. Invest in backwash hoses, a powerful pool vacuum, and a sturdy pool brush. You can use all of this equipment to clear up your current algae outbreak as well as hopefully support conditions that will discourage future algae outbreaks from occurring in your pool.

3. Pool Test Kits

Finally, keep several quality pool test kits on hand so you’ll always be ready to test the water any time you think there’s an algae outbreak. Testing your pool’s water on a regular basis isn’t just a necessary step in getting rid of algae, but a crucial step to preventing it in the first place. Staying on top of testing your pool chemistry regularly will help you determine whether or not you need to add any chemicals.

Now that you’ve read about the chemicals, filtration and cleaning equipment, as well as the pool test kits you’ll need to fight pool algae, it’s time to consider the exact sequence of steps necessary in removing algae from your pool. In the next article in our series, we’ll break down each step of the process to show you how to get rid of an outbreak of either blue, yellow, or black algae that has infested your backyard pool.
