Pool Recreation: Family-Friendly Games To Play

Last updated on January 9, 2018 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

There’s so much you can do in your swimming pool! Not only is it a healthy outlet, but it’s also an entertainment outlet. In addition to the many versions of pool tag, there are plenty of simple games you can play in your back yard swimming pool. And even if you’re goofing off, pool fun comes with some great health benefits, so you’re in for a big win. Some games require no toys or added materials, while others do. All are simple enough for young kids to play, but fun enough to get older kids, teens, and adults involved as well.

Who doesn’t love a good Chicken Fight?! Older kids and adults should be on the bottom, but competitive younger kids can sit on their shoulders. Each pair is in competition to remain upright and connected. Be sure to communicate rules of “fair play” such as no hair pulling, scratching, kicking, or punching. The first top player to fall off the shoulders and into the water loses. But really, everyone has fun, so everyone really wins.

Swim Noodle Jousting is really as much fun as it sounds like it would be! And no, it’s not just for the Renaissance Fair near you. Basically, think Chicken Fights, except that the “riders” are mounted on inflatable rafts, instead of partners, and pool noodles replace hands as their weapons of choice. The best part: You can include as many players as you have rafts and pool noodles.

Cannon Balls or Belly Flops are great crowd pleasers! Somehow, they never fail to entertain. For added interest, determine the way jumps will be judged and have a little contest. You might even want to set up a points system and have a prize to award for the most groan-worthy Belly Flop or the most splash-tastic Cannon Ball. Make it even more interesting and have spectators place “bets” on who will win.

A little more difficult to achieve, the Atomic Whirlpool is easier in a smaller pool but possible in almost any pool. You simply get everyone moving around in a circle (all the same direction, of course). Continue to swim or walk in the same direction, gaining speed. You will eventually create a giant whirlpool, which will be fun to float on with your favorite flotation device or lounger.

If you like the basketball-shooting game H-O-R-S-E, then you’ll love F-I-S-H! Basically, you take turns taking shots at a poolside basketball net. Wherever the first player shoots from, the others follow suit. Whoever misses the shot gets an “F” (the first letter in the word “FISH”). After a player already has an “F,” the next miss earns him or her an “I.” Play continues in that same way, until all players except one have become “FISH.”
