What comes to mind when you think of a pool cover? What function does a pool cover serve? Perhaps you’ve never given the idea of covering your pool any thought. But if you just bought a pool, you should absolutely give obtaining a pool cover some thought. Whatever image of a pool cover first comes to mind, you might be shocked to learn that there are actually 3 different types of pool covers, each serving its own primary function. We’ll also talk about pool cover installation, which is a crucial aspect to consider when making your pool cover decision.

Pool Safety Covers

Each form of pool cover, including solar covers and winter covers, is specifically created with its intended use in mind. A safety pool cover is the first kind of pool cover (and possibly the most significant). Such a cover’s primary function is to keep people from unintentionally entering pools. This is crucial in cases where young infants are unattended, but it can also stop young people and adults from unintentionally falling into an uncovered pool and accidentally drowning.

There are two distinct varieties of pool safety covers: closed and open. The pool will be covered completely if you choose to go with the closed pool cover design. However, a disadvantage of this type of safety cover is that your pool cover may become covered in snow or water, which then requires you to regularly remove that snow or water. The mesh construction used in the open style of pool safety covers allows water to easily trickle through.

Pool Solar Covers

The second kind of pool cover, solar covers, serves dually as a safety cover in addition to keeping debris out of the pool while primarily helping to keep the water at a more ideal temperature. The main reason people choose this kind of cover is to help save some money on pool heating. (We’ve covered solar heating in more detail in a past post.)

Pool Winter Covers

Winter covers, the third cover kind, are incredibly robust. Their main objective is to keep debris out of the pool during the off-season when the pool is closed while also functioning as a safety cover. Winter covers are very well built since they are designed to be used for longer periods of time and to be durable enough to handle some heavier ice and snow cover. You will undoubtedly require a winter pool cover to safeguard your pool during the off-season, even if you don’t feel the need for a safety pool cover or a solar pool cover.

Installation by Professionals

Hiring a pool specialist to assist you in choosing the ideal pool cover and correctly installing it is strongly advised. Make sure you obtain several price quotes before choosing a local company to perform the installation. Prepare to talk about the type of pool cover you want and any concerns which you may have.

Your swimming pool will last longer and you will be able to use it more frequently if you choose the right cover and ensure that it is installed correctly.
