Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

Last updated on April 3, 2012 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

Every month that the electric bill continues to climb, making simple upgrades to your home can reduce energy costs. The changes can be beneficial to you financially and environmentally, as using energy more efficiently can provide cleaner air and can drastically impact the environment around you in a positive way. There are multiple ways to provide energy efficiency to your home through the use of different types of natural lighting. Windows, solar light panels, and skylights provide natural warmth and energy savings, and D.R. Hartman Construction, Bethesda, MD’s premier construction company, is readily available to assist you with your energy efficiency upgrade.

Energy Saving Windows

Windows provide light, warmth, and ventilation to every home. It is vital to install quality windows that reduce energy costs and brighten your home because energy efficient windows can minimize heating, cooling, and lighting costs. Before selecting the right windows for your home, consider the energy performance ratings of windows, and understand that choosing windows with more energy efficient performance ratings will improve the efficiency of your home. Window treatments and coverings can also save energy while they decorate a room because they can reduce heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. Treatments and coverings to consider for your energy efficiency needs include awnings, blinds, draperies, high-reflectivity films, insulated panels, mesh window screens, overhangs, shades, shutters, and storm panels.

Solar Light Panels

Adding solar light panels can bring natural light to your favorite room of the house. Solar lighting can lighten and brighten your kitchen, family room, or any living space. Solar lights are installed to bring sunlight into your home, without bringing a higher electricity bill every month. Solar lighting can be an expensive upfront cost, but the decreased electric cost and natural warmth they add to your home will be worth every penny. Through using renewable energy and the sunlight from Mother Nature, solar light panels reduce electricity costs and provide warmth to your home.

Skylights

Skylights can add beauty and natural light to any room. They act as a window to the blue sky during the day and a window to the stars of the evening at night, and they’re a simple way to bring daylight and warmth into your home through the ceiling. They can also minimize heating, cooling, and lighting costs. When installing a skylight, it is important to consider the size and position of the fixture. Skylights can impact the illumination level and temperature level of the space below it, so a general rule is that the skylight size should not be more than five percent of the floor area within the room it is lighting. Skylights, obviously, must also be placed on the top floor of a home. To maximize the use of your skylight consider the position of the sun relative to the position of your skylight. Skylights facing north provide constant and cool illumination, skylights facing east provide maximum light and heat gain in the morning, skylights facing south provide the most winter sun gain, and skylights facing west provide afternoon sunlight and heat gain. Skylights are an excellent and relatively inexpensive way to provide natural warmth and beauty to any home.
