Health Benefits of Having Your Own Backyard Swimming Pool

Last updated on December 2, 2018 by Sozo Staff 12 Comments

You often hear people ask for “one good reason” to do something; well, when it comes to having your own backyard swimming pool installed, we can actually give you many more than that! There are so many and varied motivations for owning your own pool, we’re sure you’ll find at least a few reasons that resonate with your lifestyle and priorities. And who knows?! Maybe you’ll also discover a few you hadn’t even thought about before! We’ll start with the most obvious category: physical health benefits.

Low-Impact Workouts

Unlike the treadmill or exercise bike acting as a catch-all in your basement, your swimming pool offers you not only the convenience of exercise equipment along with the low-stress, enjoyable impact of swimming. Compared to jogging, swimming puts only 25% of the amount of strain on your joints and muscles. For those with arthritis and other health problems, this is a very important motivation.

Bone and Muscle Health

Partly because of the low-impact quality of water-based exercise, swimming pools offer the ideal setting for aquatic therapy sessions. The buoyancy of water makes pool-based exercise accessible to those whose bones and muscles might not be healthy enough for exercise. Adding weighted body wraps and water weights can make aqua therapy more challenging and beneficial, too.

Cardiovascular Benefits

Joints, bones, and muscles aren’t the only aspects of your body that benefit from water-based movement: swimming also provides an excellent source of cardiovascular exercise without causing strain. You can get the same benefit without risking injury nearly as significantly if you do the breaststroke or swim freestyle instead of going for a run. In fact, swimming may even help you build up cardiovascular endurance more effectively than running would!

Strength Training

Among the most successful means of building muscular stamina and strength, swimming gives you an all-over workout that strengthens both primary and secondary muscles. The more stroke types you incorporate into your workout, the more you’ll stand to work a variety of muscle groups more thoroughly than other workout types could do.

Stress Relief

Because of its buoyant properties, water has the ability to literally relieve pressure on your body. But of course, it helps relieve another kind of pressure, too. The multi-sensory aspect of a pool creates an ideal potential for relieving stress. From the relaxing feeling of weightlessness to the reflective nature and natural movement of the water, coming home to your own swimming pool is an excellent way to allow the tension to melt away.

From mental refreshment to the release of stress and even a more positive self image, those who frequently use swimming pools are typically less stressed than their peers. Of course, we all know that chronic stress translates into a host of mental and physical problems, so this health benefit is quite significant!

I was surprised when you said that swimming causes 25% less strain on our joints than jogging does. Ever since the start of the new year, I’ve been thinking a lot about what lifestyle changes I can make to get in better shape without damaging my joints. Maybe I’ll look into having a swimming pool installed in my yard as well as an enclosure to protect me from the sun while using it!

I like how you said that pool owners are less stressed than other people because water can relieve people of their stress. I have always wanted a pool but I could never get on because I was always working. I am still working but a little bit less often now so I think a pool would be a great way to relieve me of the stress that work gives me each day.

I had no clue that both your primary and secondary muscles are strengthened when you swim. I want to get into better shape over the summer. I was thinking about just going to the gym but now I think I might have a pool built in my backyard so I can workout in there every day as well.

It’s fantastic to learn that you can get excellent cardiovascular benefits from swimming in your backyard swimming pool. My wife and I are renovating our house and we were wondering if it would be worth it to get a pool installed in our backyard. I’ll be sure to tell her that we could improve our heart health by adding a swimming pool to our yard.

I wasn’t aware that stress relief could be one of the benefits of having a backyard pool due to the multi-sensory aspect of the pool. My husband and I have been wanting to get a pool in the backyard for a while to make sure our children can have some fun during the summer. I think we should look into finding a custom swimming pool contractor for help in getting the pool we want.

After moving to his current area, my uncle saw that most of his neighbors have a pool within their property. What you said about how having a pool works as a source for cardiovascular exercise without any drawbacks is very interesting. I should share this with him so he’d consider installing one as well. Who knows, he might get his beach body back using this.

I appreciate what you said about building muscular strength from swimming. I recently had back surgery and need to have low-intensity workouts. I’ll have to consider getting a pool installed in my backyard to do some lap training.
