Clever Tricks to Make Your Yard Appear More Spacious

Last updated on September 12, 2018 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

If your yard has limited square footage and you want to make the most of the area surrounding your pool, there are plenty of ways to make your lawn appear more spacious. Here are a few fresh ideas for transforming your small pool area into an impressive-looking piece of paradise.

1. Divide Your Space

Though it may sound like splitting up your limited space into sections would make it appear even smaller, the opposite is actually true. Setting up multiple outdoor stations can cause your yard to look bigger because all the space is being used for different functions. Some ideas for different areas you could set up would be your pool and spa area, your outdoor cooking and dining space, a rock or flower garden, and a patio or walkway. Use pavers, hedges, or even a vertical fountain to help clearly differentiate the spaces from one another.

2. Use Optical Illusions

Did you know that diagonally installed paving stones can trick your mind into thinking a patio or walkway is larger than it really is? The same is true of adding a winding rather than a straight pathway in your backyard. Another clever way to increase the appearance of your space is to hang sturdy outdoor mirrors in strategic locations on fences or exterior walls. All of these optical illusions can expand the look of your compact outdoor space.

3. Give Your Yard a Dramatic Doorway

Placing a romantic arch or trellis close to the entryway of your yard can give your small yet stylish yard the grand entrance it deserves. You can drape the arbor in flowing tapestries, attractive ivy, or climbing roses. Get creative when it comes to designing the details of this eye-catching outdoor gateway.

4. Install a Narrow Pool

Though large pools are fun for a crowd, they’re not always ideal for a small yard. They can end up taking over your entire space and leaving little room for any outdoor relaxation or entertaining. They can also shrink the appearance of your outdoor area. If you have limited space but still crave the refreshment of an outdoor pool, consider installing a narrow pool in your yard. You can snug it up close to your back fence to allow for a minimum of wasted space.

5. Use Depth to Your Advantage

One creative way to increase the look of your space is by adding different levels to your backyard space. You could start out with a raised porch leading to a level patio and then stepping down to a sunken pool area. Though it’s the same amount of square footage as a completely level backyard, varying levels will help split up your space and make it appear larger.

These are just a few of the many ways you can give your small yard a spacious appearance.
