Universal colors. They’re safe. They’re confidence boosting. They’re timeless. In Part 1, we considered a few scenarios that make universal colors especially helpful wardrobe choices; we also featured an extremely popular color choice this decade: blush pink. Maybe you don’t have room for any kind of pink in your closet, though. That’s okay, too! There are a few more universal color options out there, and they may be even more apt to stand the test of time.
Universal Color Choice: Stone
This calming neutral can certainly stand alone. A warm gray, stone can also be paired with bright accent colors or accessories. Unlike some neutrals, stone is more likely to look great on everyone and give off a “modern” vibe. For those who love wearing jeans, one fashion blogger explains that “a pair of stone . . . cotton pants isn’t a big ‘reach’ into the world of the dressy.” A bonus is that stone is great for combining with blush pink!
Universal Color Choice: Teal
A cross between green and blue, teal might seem like a bit of a bold choice as a “universal color” option. If you look at a color wheel, though, you’ll notice that teal is positioned exactly opposite pink! Not only does that mean that it will look good with pink, but it will also, like pink, bring out the natural flush of your cheeks. Ranging from a bright color extremely close to turquoise to a muted one similar to green slate, teal is a popular color in both the fashion world and that of interior design because of its versatility.
Universal Color Choice: Navy
Have you ever thought about how many uniforms are navy blue? And then, of course, you have America’s unofficial weekend uniform of jeans — don’t you love how a dark wash will literally go with everything?! A classic, timeless hue, navy blue is flattering on everyone.
As a dark color, navy blue also has the benefit of allowing you to appear slimmer than you really are. Unlike black, however, navy blue looks good on those with all skin colors. Besides its universal appeal, navy blue is used for uniforms, because it tends to communicate a sense of power or authority. So if you want to be taken seriously and appear confident, navy is a great color choice.
Universal Color Choice: Eggplant
Unlike most shades of purple, eggplant is a color that can work for anyone. Balancing blue and red, this deep, sophisticated hue is another dark color that evokes a sense of authority. Also referred to as “aubergine,” eggplant is a fashion-forward color you don’t want to forget.
These universal colors offer “safe” yet attractive bases for a stylish wardrobe. One additional universal color, true red, is just so fabulous that we thought it deserved its own post. Continue reading.
