It’s always important to keep your home maintained, of course, but with winter on the way, fall is the perfect time to secure your home for the cold months ahead. When it comes to protecting your home from flooding, people tend to overlook the possibility of winter troubles. However, there are a number of things you need to do in fall to ensure that your home stays safe and dry during the colder months ahead.
Have your furnace and water heater serviced.
Take advantage of the mild fall weather to be proactive about maintaining your furnace and water heater. Remove any items that may be too close to the units, and inspect your furnace and water heater for signs of damage. If either unit is due for a checkup or maintenance, be sure to call the heating/ cooling company as soon as possible. These businesses become very busy during the cold months, so calling before the winter rush means you’ll get faster service.
Repair those leaking pipes.
It’s all to easy to put off fixing leaky pipes, but it’s very important that you tackle this project before the temperature drops. If these leaks aren’t fixed before winter, they can freeze and burst, causing major flooding damage in your home. It’s also important that you insulate all exposed pipes because these will be most prone to freezing.
Inspect your foundation.
Although often overlooked, your foundation should certainly be included in your monthly home inspection. Remove vegetation and debris from around your foundation, and be sure to look for cracks. Even the smallest cracks can grow to become serious issues if they aren’t sealed right away.
Keep away the creepy crawlies.
Before winter, be sure to seal off all access points of your home around the foundation and crawlspace. As the weather gets colder, animals and pests will try to seek shelter in these warmer spaces, and if you aren’t careful, they could find their way into your home.
By following our advice on prepping your home for winter, you can make sure that your home is ready for the colder months, leaving you free to enjoy all the fun that the fall and winter seasons have to offer.
