One of the most fun things about owning a pool is getting a chance to host plenty of pool parties. You’ll find that your backyard oasis can be the highlight of creating life-long memories with your friends and family. Here are some tips to making sure your upcoming pool party is a splish-splashing success.
1. Send Fun Pool Party Invitations
If you’re into convenience and your friends are tech savvy, you can send out an email or social media message invitation complete with some pool or beach-themed photos or graphics. If you’d like to use snail mail, you can use store bought pool party invitations for convenience, or print out your own pool-party themed invitations by hand or on the computer.
You could even go all-out and hand deliver invitations designed to look like messages in a bottle! To create these fun invitations, follow these simple steps.
- First, thoroughly wash water or soda bottles and allow time for them to dry completely.
- Then write out your messages with black ink on brown paper bags that have been torn around the edges and crumpled up to resemble old pirate treasure maps.
- You can even make blotches on them with a tea bag to make the paper look more authentic.
- Add sand and seashells to the bottom of your bottles to create a genuine message-in-a-bottle effect!
Your guests will get a kick out of your nautical creativity.
2. Prepare Food in Advance
The last thing you want to be doing during your pool party is running inside to check on the food. If possible, prepare menu items that can all be ready before your guests arrive. That way you can spend time hanging out with your guests poolside rather than hovering over the stove inside the house. Utilize slow cookers for easy, fun party foods like hot dogs, sloppy joes, and cheese dip. Fresh fruit salad is always a refreshing choice. Be sure to have a place to keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Invest in coolers to make it easier to keep drinks outside by the pool. The less your water-soaked guests have to trek inside the house, the better!
3. Select a Sensational Theme
When it comes to pool parties, the theme is totally up to you. Though you don’t have to stick to a nautical theme, there are plenty of fun ones to choose from, such as pirates, Hawaiian luau, beach party, sharks, and surfing, to name just a few. You can get good deals on items that match these themes online or at your local party store if you watch sales or purchase them at the end of the summer season.
4. Keep the Bugs Away
Nothing can ruin a good pool party as quickly as pesky backyard pests such as mosquitoes and biting flies. Keep these uninvited guests away with citronella candles and tiki-torches. If you have a major problem with bugs in your yard, consider having your entire lawn treated for bugs. Also, get rid of any standing water from recent rains that may have accumulated in empty containers around your deck or in your yard as these can become breeding areas for mosquitoes.
Keeping all these items in mind will put you well on your way to planning a smashing backyard soiree. Check out the second installment of this two-part series for more fun and practical pool party planning tips!
