Avoiding Sticker Shock at Your Campus Bookstore

Last updated on October 8, 2010 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

With the new school year having just started or about to get underway, college students across the country are yet again suffering from severe cases of sticker shock caused by the prices of their textbooks for the fall semester. The epidemic has become so widespread that millions of students are seeking relief through alternative ways of buying expensive textbooks, when sticker shock is known to be most damaging to the wallets and bank accounts of college students.

What can you do to avoid coming down with this terrible affliction? Must you resign yourself to suffer the fate of your newly-destitute classmates? Thankfully not. Here are a few helpful articles detailing the various remedies with which you can save some money on your college textbooks and avoid the plague of sticker shock.

  • While there currently exists no cure for sticker shock, there are ways to lessen its effects and mitigate its impact on your bank balance. Renting textbooks is one way a lot of students get their textbooks every semester, and it has proven to be a successful defense against sticker shock. There are plenty of growing textbook rental companies across the country, most of whom can quickly ship your books just in time for that first class. Click the link to read more about where and how you can rent college textbooks. Your cash depends on it!
  • Contrary to popular belief, sharing textbooks with a classmate does little to save you money throughout your college career. In fact, sharing textbooks may cause more damage than good by forestalling the inevitable, when you’ll have to buy the book in the middle of the semester anyway after getting fed up with your partner for never coming to class. Plus, textbooks are considerably more expensive when not purchased at the beginning or end of the semester, increasing the likelihood of a severe onset of sticker shock. Read more about why sharing textbooks is a bad idea by checking out the link.
  • Besides renting your college textbooks, there are other possible ways to make sure you save the most amount of money you can. You can explore scholarships, look online for better deals, buy from fellow students, and more. For more info, check out these five tips for saving money on your textbooks.
  • Modern technology to the rescue! It should come as no surprise that there have been rapid advancements in the treatment of sticker shock over the past several years. Much of this work has been a product of technological breakthroughs such as the Amazon Kindle, iPad, and others. Textbook publishers, professors, and students are expanding the availability of cheaper electronic textbooks. This article on how digital textbooks are becoming a popular alternative for college textbooks has more details.

Don’t become just another statistic in the fight against textbook-induced sticker shock! Take precautions now to make sure you have plenty of money for the important things at college. Like food. Or beer.
